Have nothing in your house you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful," William Morris said.

Many people grew dissatisfied with the industrial revolution and this lead to the development of the arts and crafts movement. The movement came about around 1860 as a form of rebellion against the indifferent and mediocre feel of mass production from the industrial revolution.

During a time of industrialization, William Morris wanted true artisanship.
For Morris, art was in the form of craftsmanship. For the participants of the movement, the connection that developed between the artist and artwork through handcraft was the most important part to give both a sense of accomplishment and functional items that pleasing to the eye.

The movement was adored for the use of high quality materials. Along with the focus on practicality within designs. Thus aiming for a simpler and more fulfilling lifestyle.

In the year 1861, Morris founded the firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., along with artists who specialized in wallpaper designs featuring natural imagery.Morris' firm focused on handcrafting instead of machine production, resulting in high quality as Morris was involved in each part of the making of the company's items. Reinstating the concept of having the designer or artist’s guidance and participation.

Morris requested Philip Webb, one of the co-founders of his firm to design a house for him. The house is called the "Red House" and its seen as the first building from the arts and crafts movement. Which caused the building style to be most often associated with the movement.

The below figure is the front door of the red house from the inside.

The characteristics of the door that relate to the arts and crafts movement is as follows: the obvious practicality of a door and is decorated with simple patterns.
